South Iceland
between fire and ice
There’s energy everywhere in Iceland that shapes the mountains, fiords and immense deserted spaces and sparkles with the midnight sun in summer and the northern lights in winter. The volcanic formations have been engraved and worn smooth by the glaciers from the ice age and by the waves from the sea, leaving a natural masterpiece that is beyond anyone’s imagination.

A journey around the wild and remote southern Iceland, across deserts of black lava and endless stretches of ice, searching for the magic light of the north, The Aurora Borealis. We’ll walk under waterfalls and on glaciers, on beaches and mountains, among the incredible variety of autumn colours.
This adventure will help us to understand the relationship between Icelanders and glaciers and life with the most active and dangerous Vulcans of the country. The Vatnajökull National Park will be our home for most of the journey, from the sea, along the long tongues of glaciers as far as the mountains that surround them.
We’ll lose ourselves along the paths of the Skaftafell National Park, one of the Icelander’s favourite places for excursions and, in the company of an Alpine guide we’ll walk on a glacier!
This is also the home to the most famous waterfalls in Iceland – Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Systrafoss and Svartifos, not of great capacity but with breathtaking scenery and legends that make us want to dream. The Sandur, black beaches of lava, make a contrast to the icebergs broken away from the glaciers, and the majestic pillars of basalt that surround the area forming immense vertical cathedrals.
Every night will be a good occasion to try to see and photograph the aurora borealis that, thanks to the low level of air pollution in this area, makes southern Iceland one of the best places in the world for observing this incredible phenomenon.
The last day will be the occasion for a well-deserved hot bath in the sulphurous valley of Reykjadalur to sample the emotion of an immersion in a hot, wild Icelandic river.
