Shetland Isles - photographic journey

At only 6° latitude south of the Arctic Circle, the rough remote Shetland Isles make up the most northerly outpost of Scotland, and the most exasperated frontier between the land and the sea.  The setting is genuine Scottish, with deep bare valleys, buried between steep green hills, dotted by flocks of grazing sheep, sparkling blue lakes, and steep inlets with formidable cliffs populated by immense colonies of sea birds. It’s a real paradise for birdwatching and photographers.

This tour is dedicated exclusively to those who love photography. The days will be structured respecting the weather conditions and the needs of photographers.  We’ll dedicate some time to the famous puffins, to the gannets and black murres, visiting all the most frequented colonies of Shetland, from both sea and land point of view, arriving by boat at only a few meters from the cliffs.  We’ll go “hunting “ for red throated divers, golden plovers, Chur, grey lag and whooper swans in the remote internal areas of the islands and with a bit of luck we will “play” with the camouflaged mountain hares and Scottish Ptarmigan, that on the moors disappear like ghosts.

The Shetland Isles are surrounded by a sea that is rich in fish, reason why every year thousands of birds choose to stay in this natural oasis to breed. The elegant  Arctic Tern arrives deliberately from the South pole and makes large colonies on the ground defending themselves from anyone who dares to approach  with  thrashing overhead attacks . The coast of these areas are densely populated by grey seals  and common seals, that are completely at home in  the presence of man. With all this food, the notorious killer whale has learnt to hunt in these waters, arriving at times at only a few meters from the coast or in the port of the capital.

A day will be dedicated to the otter, rare predator and hard to see in the rest of Europe, but here he has found an ideal habitat.

An unforgettable photographic journey, rich in emotions and unique meetings with sunsets and sunrises that fill our files and …we hope our hearts.
